Terms of use

Honest, plain-language terms for using Kotoba Dōjō on the web and in the mobile app.

Kotoba Dōjō is a personal language-learning service operated by Artsiom Chtrykov (“we”, “us”). By creating an account you agree not to abuse the service: don’t try to break it, don’t upload anything that would get us in trouble.

You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16; if you believe a child has created an account, write to us and we will delete it. Sixteen is also the age at which, across the EU, you can give your own consent for us to process your data — which is why we ask for it rather than for a parent’s.

The service is provided “as is” — we work hard to keep it running and aim for high availability, but we don’t guarantee uninterrupted access and won’t be liable for losses arising from downtime.

Free accounts and fair use

Every account can add and train an unlimited number of cards from our library. Free accounts may keep up to 25 cards of their own (typed by hand or picked out of a text you imported) and use the core practice exercises; Pro removes the custom-card limit and unlocks the rest. Pro is not granted automatically on signup; free Pro time exists only where an offer is made to you — an introductory offer in the app stores, a trial at web checkout, or a referral reward — and the terms of that offer are shown when it is made. Features that call an AI or translation provider carry fair-use limits on all tiers — a free account gets a daily allowance of AI-quality translations and then continues on standard machine translation. We may adjust these limits, and we may throttle or suspend an account that is clearly automating the service or circumventing them.

Your content

Cards, decks, texts you import and samurai names that you create remain yours. We claim no rights to your content beyond storing it so we can show it back to you. Only import texts, transcripts or files you have the right to use for your own study; they stay private to your account and are never published by us. Posts on the public feedback board are, by their nature, visible to everyone, and you grant us the right to show them there.

AI-generated card content (definitions, translations, examples, illustrations) is produced on demand and is intended for your personal study only — quality may vary, and you should sanity-check facts before relying on them outside the dojo.

Notifications

With the mobile app you may receive push notifications about your study (reminders, a streak at risk), and we may send you occasional product emails. You can switch push off in your device settings or under Self → Notifications, and every email has an unsubscribe link.

Subscriptions & billing

Kotoba Dōjō Pro is an optional paid subscription. Pricing is shown at checkout (currently $5.99 / month or $50.99 / year, plus any applicable tax; store prices may differ by region). Subscriptions are billed in advance and renew automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel. On the web, payments are processed by Stripe; in the mobile app, by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We never store your full card details.

You can cancel at any time. Web subscriptions: from Self → Manage subscription (Stripe Customer Portal). App-store subscriptions: from your Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings — the store, not us, controls that subscription. When you cancel, your Pro access continues until the end of the period you’ve already paid for, then your account reverts to the free tier — your cards and study history are kept. If a free trial is offered, it converts to a paid subscription at the end of the trial unless you cancel beforehand.

Refunds & cancellation

Because you can cancel any time and keep access through the period you’ve paid for, we generally don’t offer refunds for partial periods, except where required by law. If you’re in the EU, you keep your statutory right to withdraw within 14 days of a new subscription where applicable. Purchases made through the App Store or Google Play are refunded by that store under its own policy. To request a refund on a web subscription or report a billing problem, email privacy@kotobadojo.com.

The mobile app

The iOS and Android apps are licensed to you, not sold, for personal use on devices you own or control. Apple and Google are not parties to these terms and have no obligation to provide support or maintenance for the app; where you obtained it from the App Store, Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to the extent it is stricter than these terms.

If we materially change these terms, we will notify users with active accounts. These terms are governed by the laws of Poland, and any disputes will be handled by the competent courts of Poland, without prejudice to any mandatory consumer-protection rights you have under the law of your EU country of residence.
